WE DON'T BUY IT!

This critique, from Slate, of the book review critic for the New York Times holds her to standards that the critic of the critic thinks to be of paramount importance; but we think that evaluating a book as worthy or not IS the basic task that a useful and focused critic must perform if she does, as well, adduce convincing and interesting reasons for her judgment. And Kakutani does--more than just about any other regular opiniuonist writing for the Times!
