A FEW SLAPS ON THE WRIST...
...for a madman who may soon have access to nuclear-armed missiles. The gentleman in question is the new president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who continues to urge the extermination (or is it merely the "disestablishment?") of the state of Israel.

THE ISRAELI REACTION TO AHMADINEJAD...
...is worth noting, all the more so because hawks within their military (and possibly Netanyahu in the forthcoming election) may well be tempted to advocate preemptive assault upon Iranian nuclear facilities.

WHO CAN EXPLAIN RAMSEY CLARK...AND HOW?
The man who has taken the challenge is the indominatable Christopher Hitchens and here's his try as just published by the Los Angeles Times.

FARCE TURNS TO TRAGEDY IN BAGHDAD:
The farce is the Saddam trial and the way it has been misstaged, mismanaged and misdirected. So says Krauthammer in this column from the Washington Post. The tragedy is that an opportunity to expose the horror that he inflicted upon his country has been squandered.

AND SPEAKING OF TRAGEDY AND FARCE...
...in the manner evoked in the famous quote from Karl Marx, it is applied, in this Claremont Review article, to the decline of Communism and the parallel decline of the "counterculture." Excellently argued and observed!

A CALL FOR AN ARAB-MUSLIM ANTI-TERRORISM MOVEMENT...
...has just been issued by a distinguished Arab intellectual who teaches at American University in Washington. One hopes that this essay, just printed in The Daily Star from Lebanon, will get wide circulation, heavy linking and full discussion.

AND SPEAKING OF DARWINIAN EVOLUTION...
...as we did recently with the father of sociobiology, E.O. Wilson (you can hear that program here), what about the "Darwinian" approach to behavior, i.e. "evolutionary psychology?" Here's a rather skeptical article from, appropriately enough, Skeptic magazine.

A SKIRMISH IN THE CHRISTMAS VS. "HOLIDAY" WARS...

THE NEW "CULTURE WAR" IN THE UNIVERSITIES...
...is tracked and explained (sort of) in this well-meant article from Inside Higher Ed. Much more could be, and should be, said but this serves as a useful intro for those off-campusites who are wondering what the professoriat is stirring over these days.

THE CALUMNIFICATION OF JOHN SIEGENTHALER...
...in the web pages of Wikipedia does highlight one of the prime defects of instant, and unedited, "publication" on the web. The New York Times article reporting the mess is only the beginning of a long-overdue discussion of a dysfunction that must be brought under corrective control.

EDITH PIAF'S SUCCESOR...
...surely was (and still is) the great chanteuse, Mireille Mathieu. Scroll halfway down beyond the graphics to the play list and take your choice of her wonderful performances in French, German and English. A must-hear, of course, is her version (a tribute to Piaf) of "Je ne Regrette Rien." Also, "Der Pariser Tango" is a must hear and must-see. Enjoy!
