CTA tracks raised several stories above street level carry elevated, or L' trains, and encircle the part of downtown Chicago called The Loop. The CTA is an independent government agency created in 1947 with the acquisition of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company and Chicago Surface Lines. In 1952, the CTA became the sole operator of Chicago transit when it purchased the Chicago Motor Coach system and its fleet of buses. The CTA is governed by the Chicago Transit Board, whose seven members are appointed by the mayor.  « Show less
