The Burnham Institute for Medical Research is a private, non-profit institute based in La Jolla, Calif., that is establishing a campus in Orlando. Burnham's initial work focused exclusively on cancer but has expanded during its 30 years to include neuroscience, infectious and inflammatory diseases, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disorders and other conditions. Even so, cancer remains a top priority, encompassing about 70 percent of its research projects. The institute has been involved in developing a handful of cancer medicines, but drug discovery is not its main focus.

The majority of work delves into basic science unraveling the fundamental mechanics of diseases by studying their molecular underpinnings. With an annual budget of about $87 million, Burnham employs 750 researchers, doctors and staff.

In 2007, the institute opened its Florida campus at temporary quarters in south Orlando and is constructing an $80 million facility at Lake Nona. The new building is scheduled to be completed in 2009. After considering other locations, Burnham was lured to Central Florida with $360 million in state and local incentives. The institute estimates that it eventually will employ up to 500 people in Florida. Orlando business leaders consider Burnham crucial in establishing a biomedical research community at Lake Nona, which also will be home to the University of Central Florida's Medical School and other health-related enterprises.
