Summer
Song Lists
John has been asking for your summer song list. Below are the
ones turned
in by the afternoon
crew as well as you...
Dave Stewart's List:
Summertime, Summertime - The Jamies
Barefootin' - Robert Parker
Long Promised Road - Beach Boys
Heart and Soul - Jan and Dean
Summertime - Billy Stewart
Spinning Wheel - Blood, Sweat and Tears
Heroes and Villains - Beach Boys
Summer - War
Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
Buy For Me The Rain - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
-----------------
Didn't quite make the cut:
Theme
from "A Summer Place" - Percy Faith and his Orchestra
Summertime Blues-Who
California Nights - Leslie Gore
Double Shot - Swinging Medallions
Leslie Keiling's list:
I find myself bunching artists. Why? Probably because it’s
just easier than burning a CD or having to change discs all the
time…..
CD:
Six Feet Under: Everything Ends - Various Artists
Feelin’ Good….Nina Simone
Amazing Life….Jem
Breathe Me….Sia
The
first two are beautiful, sexy, life-affirming summer sizzlers.
The third is dark, yet beautiful.
CD:
How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - U2
Vertigo
City of Blinding Lights
These
two are Rock anthems of the highest power, and were also featured
in a very funny episode of Entourage last season.
CD: Give Up - Postal Service
Such
Great Heights
Sleeping In
We Will Become Silhouettes
Light
and breezy summer songs, featuring sly lyrics. “Sleeping
In” features an explanation of global warming as a higher
power’s gift to humanity for being nice and obeying stop
signs…now we can swim any day in November. “We Will
Become” is the cutest little homage to post-apocalyptic
living you’ll ever find.
CD:
Reason - Hoobastank
The
Reason
It’s
a love song. What can I say? I’m a girl.
CD:
Parachutes - Coldplay

Hi John Williams!
I love your show!
Every
year since 1997, I have been creating a summer mix for the car.
At first, it was a cassette, followed by a CD...and today, the
iPod has completely changed the way I listen to music, including
the Summer 2006 Ultimate Road Trip Playlist:
Gone
- Ben Folds
Summer, Highland Falls - Billy Joel
Something So Strong - Crowded House
As Soon as the Tide Comes In - Del Amitri
The Long Way Around - Dixie Chicks (off the new album, which is
AWESOME!)
Mexico - James Taylor
Ragtop Day - Jimmy Buffett
Without Expression - John Mellencamp
Fool in the Rain - Led Zeppelin
Delerious Love - Neil Diamond (off his new album, which is also
fabulous)
Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
and,
finally...
A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request - Steve Goodman
Enjoy!

Subject: summer mix
Hi John! I have a WHOLE LOT of songs on my i-pod nano (almost
500 to choose from!) but if I were going to choose my 10 song
summer mix, it would read as follows (and in no particular order):
1) Meant to Live by Switchfoot--reminds me that (as the song says)
"we were meant to live for so much more, but we've lost ourselves..but
somehow we'll survive"
2) Creation Song by Fernando Ortega---when I am outside, and I
hear the birds singing, the beauty of the flowers, and the wonder
of all God created, it humbles me and reminds me that there are
bigger things and more important things than me
3) Don't Stop Believin' by Journey--because it reminds me of summer
fun and seeing them in concert in 1981.
4) Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' by Journey--same reason as number
3 (and also of the guy I was dating then, and am now VERY HAPPILY
married to--we'll be celebrating our 25th anniversary in Feb.
'07!)
5) Easy Come, Easy Go by Bobby Sherman--I remember being in grade
school (can't remember which year now, but I think maybe 6th),
and that song was sooooo popular, and Bobby Sherman was soooo
CUTE! (and yes, I am dating myself with this one--I'm 46! My kids
laugh when I talk about grade school, junior high and high school
because the only name that remained the same is high school!)
6) Faith to be Strong by Andrew Petersen---it is a wonderful song
about faith and the fact that in our own abilities we can do very
little--more often than not, it is our faith that carries us through.
7) Family of Man by 3 Dog Night---My high school years were spent
listening to LOTS of music by 3 Dog NIght, I was hard pressed
to find one or two that would be exclusive to my summer mix!
8) Brickyard Blues by 3 Dog Night---same reason as number 7
9) Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce---another artist I loved in junior
high school. He was taken from us MUCH too soon!
10) I Can Only Imagine by Mercy Me---it talks about imagining
what it will be like when we finally get to meet Jesus. A day
I'm eagerly looking forward to.
A caveat to this is--I know that some of my choices come from
the realm of contemporary Christian music and alot of people would
pooh-pooh that. For me, those songs are life affirming, reassuring
and uplifting. I will also say that this list is neither exhaustive
or exclusive--it would be subject to change at whim, depending
on what I feel I want to listen to at the time. Sooo, my choices
today may not necessarily be my choices next week. In fact, I
can almost guarantee you that with a choice limited to only 10
songs for your "assignment", this list would change
OFTEN throughout the summer!
Thanks for helping me to take a stroll down memory lane by helping
me look at my music and see what melodies spark memories.

i
heard your summer songs segment and invitation for listeners to
contribute today so i just had to compile this list:
1.
michael leviton - summer's the worst
a very
sweet song by a guy with a ukelele who toured with they might
be giants earlier this year.
2. beck

this
funky song from his mutations album practically bleeds summer.
3.
kinks - sunny afternoon
lazin'
on a sunny afternoon is a favorite summer pastime of many.
4.
beulah - burned by the sun
a least
favorite summer pastime of many. great band who never seemed to
get enough recognition and now it's too late: they broke up in
2003.
5.
daniel johnston - the sun shines down on me
great
song by the indie underground god.
6.
kimya dawson - tire swing
this
record was released in the spring but this particular song feels
like summer to me. it's named after a tire swing that i like to
visit during the summer in downtown grand rapids where i live.
7.
ween - ocean man
i love
the vocals in this song.
8.
starlight mints - popsickle
very
cute song, certainly fit for summer due to its titular subject.
9.

i had
to include my favorite band in here somewhere.
10.
jonathan richman - that summer feeling
this
guy is a freakin' genius.

Subject: Summer Compilation
Dear
John,
Every
summer since our 8 year old son Mike was a baby, we've been taking
a
road trip to Door Co., WI. Being creatures of habit, we always
bring the same
set of CDs. The boys (Mike 8 & Bill 5) have heard the same
music over & over
again for one week each summer. They've come to refer to the songs
as
"vacation music." Since they are both under ten and
we're both over forty, we have no
idea how to download songs, burn a CD, use an MP3 or whatever
the newest
technology is! So this year the same set of CDs will be packed
up for the road
trip.
Here,
in no particular order, with our own personal liner notes, is
the Brady
Family Summer Compilation:
"American
Pie" - Don McLean - The boys know most of the words and Mom
saw Don
McLean in concert at IIT many, many years ago.
"Summer Breeze" - Seals & Croft
"Brown Eyed Girl" - Van Morrison - Enough Said.
"Full Force Gale"- Van Morrison - Always important to
remember who can
really lift you up.
"Speeding Motorcycle" - Yo La Tengo - Great back yard
music for the summer.
"The Girl from Ipanema" as played by Jazz pianist Erroll
Garner - Mom & Dad
first heard this rendition long before Mike & Bill, during
an impromptu road
trip to Lake Geneva in FEBRUARY. It will always make you feel
the warmth of
summer.
"Brandy"- Looking Glass - on the radio waves contantly
during family trips of
the mid seventies.
"Volere' " - The Gypsy Kings - Mike & Bill's favorite
dancing tune.
"Will Ye Go Lassie, Go" - The Irish Tenors - Sounds
really good in the woods
of Northern Door County.
"Your Feets too Big - Fats Waller - It makes us all laugh!
This
may not be ideal music for the seven mile back up into the 83rd
toll
plaza, but it's a lot of fun on family vacations.
Love
Your Show,
Ellen & Matt

Subject: Summer Songs
I'm really dating myself here, but it was fun to think about favorite
summer songs. They seem to center around certain events in my
life: You've Got a Friend was a special song at High School graduation,
September Morn was playing the summer we were preparing for our
September wedding. Some bring back such happy special memories,
others bring a sense of poignancy. Either way, this was fun to
do. Here's my list:
I'm Henry the 8th - Herman's Hermits 1965
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond 1966
Daydream Believer - The Monkees 1967
Happy Together - The Turtles 1967
It Could be We're in Love - The Cryin' Shames 1967
Abraham Martin and John - Dion 1968
Do it Again - The Beach Boys 1968
You've Got a Friend - James Taylor 1971
Diary - Bread 1972
Annie's Song - John Denver 1974
Silly Love Songs - Paul McCartney 1976
September Morn - Neil Diamond 1980

Hello!
My favorite summer song is "Cuando Calienta El Sol"
of Helmut Lotti. He sings this song on his CD "Latino Classics".
The wonderful voice of Helmut Lotti and this beautiful song makes
a great feeling of summer.
Greetings
