MONDAY, AUGUST 1
DEADLY DISEASES
Cardiovascular and neurological diseases are two of the biggest killers in America. Learn of the latest advances in treating and dodging each from two doctors from the University of Chicago. Dr. Matthew Sorrentino is a non-invasive preventive cardiologist with expertise and research interests in treating hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), hypertension and coronary artery disease. And Dr. Christopher Gomez, Chairman of the Department of Neurology is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ataxias--a family of rare neurodegenerative diseases.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 2
THE CRAFT OF HISTORY
How do historians go about gathering information to piece together the past? And just how accurate is this process? Historians Constantin and Robert Bucholz discuss these questions while sharing some of what they've learned from their fieldwork over the years. Fasolt's research at the University of Chicago deals with the origin and significance of modern historical and political thought, while Bucholz specializes in early modern European history at Loyola.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3
AVOID GETTING SCAMMED
Consumer fraud, identity theft, blatant rip-off: we are all potential targets. "Caveat Emptor" (buyer beware) said the Romans and we have all the more reason to heed the same warning. So say our guests, the head of the Better Busuiness Bureau and the Director of the Consumer Affairs Division for the state of Illinois.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 4
THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL ANNOUNCING
BROADCASTING BASEBALL is the title of a wonderful new book by our friend, Eldon Ham. He and broadcasting historian, Fred MacDonald are the guests...and via sound clips, commentary and coverage by, among others, Harry Caray, Phil Rizzuto, Mel Allen, Vin Scully, Howard Cosell, Jack Brickhouse, Milo Hamilton, Dizzy Dean and (wait for it) Ronald Reagan.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 7
SHE SELLS SEA SHELLS BY THE SEA SHORE
"Speak the speech I pray you as I pronounced it to you trippingly on the tongue." That's what Hamlet asks of the travelling actors who have just arrived at the palace. Three actors join us tonight to get speech and performance coaching from Nancy Saklund, a famous speech and performance coach---and she will evaluate how you use your voice when you call us.
MONDAY, AUGUST 8
BUDGET CRISIS; THE RED MARKET
A two part program tonight: From 10-11PM we will be talking with Congressman Dana Rorbacher and John Fund of the Wall Street Journal. The topic: the debt and budget crisis and the accusation of "tea party terrorism." In the second hour our guest is Scott Carney, author of THE RED MARKET, a startling new book about the international trade in human organs.
