THURSDAY SEPTEMBER
2ND
THE AGING BRAIN
Tonight's show is er.. now where did I put theses notes.. is ..er.. A
declining ability to remember is commonly held to be one of the symptoms
of old age, but the actual effect of aging upon the function of the brain
is far from clear and is the subject of serious scientific investigation.
In addition to supposedly normal changes there are also the traumatic
effects of diseases such as Alzheimer's which occur with greater frequency
in elderly populations. Tonight's show considers the relationship between
old age and the brain's function. Join our expert panel, including Dr
Aryeh Routtenberg and Professor Neil Pliskin, and find out
if you really can teach an old dog new tricks tonight on Extension 720.

What are days for? For some the answer to the poet, Philip Larkin's question
has been to produce great literature. Tonight on Extension 720 an expert

the diary as a literary form. The conversation will of course be illustrated
with selected readings. A show definitely worth noting in your own diary

indeed only recently has the Supreme Court released the audio recordings
that are routinely made of all cases. Professor Jerry Goldman has
collated 70 hours of these recordings on one innovative computer CD. He
will join us together with an expert panel in a discussion of the role
and significance of the modern court. The program will of course draw

ENGLISH AS A WORLD LANGUAGE
Johnson defined a lexicographer as: A writer of dictionaries; a harmless
drudge that busies himself in tracing the original and detailing the significance
of words. It might also serve as a definition of tonight's show as we
join lexicographers, Anne Soukhanov and John Domini, in
tracing the development of English over time and across the globe. So
don't be a 'wowser' as our antipodean friends might say and tune into
tonight's installment of Extension 720
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER

PSYCHIC PHENOMENA
James Williams, world famous psychic researcher joins Extension
720. Williams' claims that years of extensive research have enabled him
to develop extraordinary mental powers. Tune in tonight, after the early

phenomena.

TURNING A BLIND EYE
Could the medical establishment have overlooked the activities of a man
the FBI believes may have been the most prolific serial killer in American
history? This is the chilling thesis of Pulitzer Prize winning author
James B. Stewart's latest book Blind Eye: How the Medical Establishment
Let A Doctor Get Away With Murder. Stewart believes that, in his pursuit
of the alleged serial killer Dr Michael Swango, he has uncovered shocking
evidence of the medical establishment's eagerness to look after its own,
even to the extent of allowing a potential killer to practice in their
midst. Don't turn a blind eye to tonight's Extension 720
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER
16TH
ON THE COUCH OR ON THE MAKE?
Tonight's guest Professor Richard Ofshe visits Chicago to testify
in the city's investigation of the use of video in police investigations.
As well as a frequent commentator on matters relating to criminal justice
Ofshe is also the co-author of the new book Therapy's Delusions: The
Myth of the Unconscious and the Exploitation of Today's Walking Worried.
In the book he exposes the pseudo science behind the twentieth century's
most enduring myth: Freud's theory of the psychodynamic mind. Despite
the lack of credible evidence for a powerful unconscious that controls
our behavior a huge number of therapists continue to base their practice
on the idea that only they can uncover their patients' unconscious motivations,
luring thousands of American's into costly and potentially damaging paths
of treatment. Save your sanity or at least prevent hours of unproductive
navel gazing, with an intensive session in the consulting room tonight
on Extension 720.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER
