George Levy professor of legal studies at Roosevelt University and author of To Die in Chicago (Pelican) will discuss his account of the conditions faced by Confederate prisoners of war at Camp Douglas during the American civil war. The discussion begins right after an early ball game. Tuesday May 4th Kosovo, Palestine, Northern Ireland, Ruanda and "Kurdistan" all provide recent vivid examples of the conflicts that can arise from nationalism and nationalistic thought. Jean Bethke Elshtain Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School and author of New Wine & Old Bottles, International Politics and Ethical Discourse discusses nationalism (and the present difficulties that arise from it) with Milt tonight . Friday May 14th Genes, the sex war and poetry. Lionel Tiger, The Charles Darwin Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers University minted the phrase "male bonding". In his new book The Decline of Males (Golden Books) Tiger argues that the balance of power between the sexes has shifted in favor of women. Professor Tiger is joined by Richard Dawkins, Professor of the Public Understanding of science at Oxford University and author of The Selfish Gene. Arguably one of the theory of evolutions most powerful advocates, in his latest book Unweaving the Rainbow (Houghton-Mifflin) Dawkin's defends science from Keat's charge that by explaining nature science we diminish our awe and admiration of it. Wednesday May 26th David Kennedy Professor of History at Stanford and author of Freedom From Fear, The American People in Depression and War 1929-1945 discusses two of the greatest challenges to face America in recent history. As we wage war in the Balkans and worry about the sustainability of the economy, Kennedy's book provides a timely opportunity for Extension 720 to consider some of the lessons of history.
