Extension 720 tonight takes a look at the best and worst magazines of the past several years and examines the visible trends in the magazine world. From the New Republic to the National Review, from the Atlantic Monthly to the Weekly Standard, and all the political, literary, historical and entertainment mags in between: JIM WARREN, deputy managing editor of the Chicago Tribune, and ABE PECK, professor of journalism and head of the magazine program at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, will be on hand to discuss them all.

The presidential race is heating up, the United States remains a major presence in Iraq, and then there is the looming threat of a nuclear Iran and the ongoing genocide in the Sudan. Tune in to hear discussion of these topics and more as we welcome DICK CICCONE, former managing editor of the Chicago Tribune, TOM BEVAN of Real Clear Politics, and CHARLES LIPSON, professor of political science at the University of Chicago.

Extension 720 tonight welcomes our old friend and old time radio expert J. FRED MACDONALD, president of MacDonald and Associates and professor emeritus of history at Northeastern Illinois University. He will be bringing in audio from past presidential campaigns to highlight how politicians use the media to get elected. Included in tonight's show will be audio from Taft, Coolidge, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon, plus archival radio footage of celebrities campaigning for presidents and cartoons and programs produced specifically for campaigns.

Tonight on Extension 720, we celebrate those who are engaged in this interesting art by welcoming a panel of voice actors to discuss and demonstrate their craft. Our guests include JAMES ALBURGER and PENNY ABSHIRE, authors of The Art of Voice Acting: The Craft and Business of Performing Voice-Over. They will be joined by TIM DADABO and DOUG JAMES, two veteran voice over actors from Chicago.

AN EVENING OF POETRY

Aristotle once wrote that “poetry is something more philosophical and more worthy of serious attention than history.” Tonight on Extension 720, poetry will be given due intellectual consideration with a panel of experts, including CHRISTIAN WIMAN, editor of Poetry Magazine and GERRY MURRAY, a renowned poet and professor of creative writing at Columbia College Chicago. Tune in to hear a wealth of poems from all eras read by our panel and by their authors.

Tonight on the program, we look at the manipulation of sub-atomic particles to make better and stronger materials a panel of expert nanotechnologists, including MARYA LIEBERMAN of the University of Notre Dame and MILAN MRKSICH of the University of Chicago.
