Just in time for the 4th of July, Extension 720 tonight examines the American Presidency from a completely new angle—namely, how well or poorly do our presidents speak? We will be joined by language expert ALLAN METCALF, professor of English at MacMurray College, to dissect the diction, syntax, grammar and other facets of presidential speech, such as the charismatic eloquence of some and the limping oratorical style of others. Metcalf's latest book is Presidential Voices: Speaking Styles from George Washington to George W. Bush. Tune in for plenty of speeches and insight into the syntactical meaning of the presidency.

Now more than ever, in an age of suicide bombings and hijackings, we need to examine the historical roots of martyrdom. Tonight on Extension 720 we welcome JOYCE SALISBURY, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, and GEORGE KALANTZIS, professor of Church History at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, to discuss the Christian martyrs of the middle ages and how the history of that era illuminates the present.
Salisbury’s latest book is The Blood of Martyrs: The Impact and Memory of Ancient Violence.

JACKSON, professor of history at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and author of the new book Singing in My Soul: Black Gospel Music in a Secular Age.
