Yesterday marked the 80th anniversary of WGN Radio, and tonight Extension 720 examines some highlights from the station’s history. Joining us will be ROY LEONARD, a broadcaster for thirty-one years, and WARD QUAAL, who managed the station for a number of years. The French Revolution and ensuing Napoleonic wars had an impact on the course of modern history almost too large to be described. However, Extension 720 tonight will try to examine how history the history of that era affects the present. Our guests will be DAVID JORDAN, professor of history at the University of Illinois Chicago, and PETER FRITZSCHE, professor of history at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and author of the new book Stranded in the Present: Modern Time and the Melancholy of History.

Tonight, Extension 720 commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day with a special program on the “Fighting First” Army division and their exceptional performance on the beaches of France. Extension 720 tonight discusses the origins of homo sapiens sapiens and our close anthropoid relatives with two experts in paleoanthropology: JAMES PHILLIPS, professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and adjunct curator of anthropology at the Field Museum, and ROBERT MARTIN, vice president for academic affairs at the Field Museum and adjunct professsor of anthropology at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

BIOTECHNOLOGY AND MORALITY

Tonight on the program, Extension 720 discusses the moral implications of biotechnology through religion, including both Jewish and Catholic beliefs. Our guests will be BYRON SHERWIN, vice president and distinguished professor at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Studies and author of the new book Golems Among Us: How a Jewish Legend Can Help Us Navigate the Biotech Century. Joining him will be FATHER KEVIN O'ROURKE, professor of Bioethics at the Nieswanger Institute of Bioethics and Health Policy at the Strich School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, and REX CHISHOLM, director of the Center for Genetic Medicine and professor of cell and molecular biology at Northwestern University.
