What does it mean to be a nun in the 21st century? Nuns—or “women religious” as they are now more commonly known—have had an integral role in the Catholic Church for centuries and their influence is still great today. Tonight we welcome two women religious to the program: SISTER JOAN McGLINCHEY, head of the Office for Religious for the Chicago Archdiocese, and SISTER CAROLYN FARRELL, head of the Gannon Center for Women at Loyola University. They will be joined by CHERYL L. REED, investigative journalist at the Chicago Sun-Times and author of the new book Unveiled: The Hidden Lives of Nuns.

Our guests will be two expert linguists: FREDERICK SCHWINK, professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and JASON MERCHANT, professor of linguistics at the University of Chicago.

Chicago’s long and storied history of corruption is almost as old as the city itself, as are the various attempts at reform. Tonight, Extension 720 will trace that history with two expert guests: JAMES L. MERRINER, former political correspondent for the Chicago Sun-Times and author of the new book Grafters and Goo Goos: Corruption and Reform in Chicago, 1833-2003, and JAY STEWART, president of the Better Government Association.

But National Book Award winner RON CHERNOW argues in his new biography, Alexander Hamilton, that he the most influential man in American history never to have been president. Tonight we will reevaluate Hamilton’s legacy with Chernow after the 6:05 Cubs game.

Author of the bestselling Explaining Hitler and The Secret Parts of Fortune, Rosenbaum is the editor of the new book Those Who Forget the Past: The Question of Anti-Semitism. He will join the program tonight to discuss the continued rise of anti-Semitism in the world, as well as other topics on the domestic and international fronts.

Tonight on the program we examine his career and listen to some clips from his films with GENE PHILLIPS, professor of English at Loyola University Chicago and author of the new book Godfather: The Intimate Francis Ford Coppola. He will be joined by MICHAEL DAWSON, president of Intermission Productions, Ltd. and an expert in film restoration.

Reich is University Professor at Brandeis University and Maurice B. Hexter Professor of Social and Economic Policy at Brandeis’s Heller Graduate School, but has served under both Republican and Democratic presidents, most recently as Secretary of Labor under President Clinton. His latest book is Reason: Why Liberals Will Win the Battle for America. Reich will be joined by STEVEN ANTLER, professor of economics at Roosevelt University and proprietor of Econopundit.
