WHAT IS BRANDING?
Do you have a favorite brand of dishwasher detergent, beer, broadband
service or, of course, toothpaste? Though most associate the term
“branding” with ranching, branding is the marketing
practice by which advertisers, using slogans, TV and radio and
spokespeople, give a product a certain image. Tonight on Extension
720 we explore the world of branding and examine some branding
successes and failures with DON E. SCHULTZ and HEIDI SCHULTZ,
co-authors of the new book
Brand
Babble: Sense and Nonsense About Branding.

IMMIGRATION
“Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning
to breathe free…” Although the Statue of Liberty is
seen as the cornerstone icon of immigration, the stereotypes associated
with Her famous plea can now be seen as just that – stereotypes.
As editor of the new book
Reinventing
the Melting Pot: Will Today's Immigrants Become Americans?,
TAMAR JACOBY shows how immigration isn’t just for the tired
and poor anymore. One in nine Americans is an immigrant. Twenty
percent of all U.S. households speak a language other than English
at home. What does this mean for the future of America, and what
impact do immigrants have in the days after 9/11?
