The world’s premiere writing style guide the Chicago Manual of Style, has just reappeared in its 15th edition. Tonight on Extension 720, we will examine the evolution of this famed tome, as well as explore how language itself has changed. Joining us will be ANITA SAMEN, managing editor of the University of Chicago Press, MARGARET MAHAN, editor of the newest edition of the manual, and JOE WILLIAMS, emeritus professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Chicago.

THE EVOLUTION AND CURRENT CONDITION OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

Is the very term an oxymoron or can there be a real science of politics? We are joined by three representatives of that discipline. They are RICHARD MERELMAN, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of the new book Pluralism at Yale: The Culture of Political Science in America, IAN HURD, professor of political science at Northwestern University and THOMAS ENGEMAN, professor of political science at Loyola University.

THE CLIFF AT THE END OF THE MIDDLE EAST ROAD MAP
The suicide bombing in Jerusalem on August 19 that killed twenty people, the assassination of a Hamas leader and the death of two Palestinian militants in a West Bank hospital have formed a seemingly unsurmountable blockade on the road map to peace between Israel and Palestine. Tonight we have two experts who will debate this issue after the 6:10 Cubs game. They are DAVID ROET, deputy consul general at the Midwest Consulate General of Israel in Chicago, and GHADA HASHEM TALHAMI, professor of politics at Lake Forest College.

Be sure to listen as we discuss military strategy and the evolution of combat from the Greeks to today.
