It's Hardly Sportin': Stadiums, Neighborhoods, and the New Chicago THE OLD STADIUMS AND THE NEW!
Ah, the simple days when Comiskey was still Comiskey and corporate sponsorships didn’t ruin sports. Or didn’t they? Tonight COSTAS SPIROU and LARRY BENNET, authors of the new book It's Hardly Sportin': Stadiums, Neighborhoods, and the New Chicago, will discuss the history of sports in Chicago and the stories behind Wrigley Field, Comiskey (now U.S. Cellular) Park and the United Center. After the 6:05 Cubs game, we will explore the possibility that “the good ol’ days” were not quite as good as we remember!

SUMMER MOVIES

Some have called 2003 the summer of sequels, since the X-Men, Matrix, and Terminator franchises have all come out with new movies, not to mention 2 Fast 2 Furious, Bad Boys 2, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. But are they any good? And what else is out there for those less inclined towards action or comic book movies? Tonight our regular panel of movie critics, GENE PHILLIPS, PENELOPE MESIC and JOSH LARSEN, will discuss the best and the worst of this summer’s offerings.

FRIDAY, JULY 4TH
A PATRIOTIC PAGEANT

In honor of Independence Day, Extension 720 will air two taped segments that center on the Revolutionary War and America. The first hour will feature LONNIE BUNCH, president of the Chicago Historical Society, talking about the events and long-range consequences of our fight for independence from Britain. Tune in for historical insights as well as musical highlights from the period. During the second hour, we will replay renowned journalist DAVID BRINKLEY'S final appearance on Extension 720. Brinkley discusses his years as a journalist as well as reads some of his favorite commentaries.

MONDAY, JULY 7TH
Tapes will follow the 7:05 Cubs game. Possibilities include producer ROBERT CORT on Hollywood, DR. ROBERT THAYER on energy and mood, BUCKNER F. MELTON JR. on the mutiny on the warship Summers, ANNE FORD on her struggle to raise a child with learning disabilities, IRIS CHANG on the Chinese in America, and MABEL CABOT on China and Tibet.

TUESDAY, JULY 8TH
Perfect Planet, Clever Species: How Unique Are We? THE UNIQUE HUMAN?
Whether humans are a unique species on this earth and in the universe has plagued scientists for centuries and tonight on Extension 720, we continue that debate. WILLIAM BURGER, curator emeritus of Chicago’s own Field Museum, has just written a book Perfect Planet, Clever Species: How Unique Are We?, that traces the biology behind human development and argues that human beings have unique abilities that cannot be duplicated. Joining him will be LUCY FORTSON of the Adler Planetarium, who will give the other perspective on the possibility and capabilities of extra-terrestrial life.



WEDNESDAY, JULY 9TH
Essays on Poetry GREAT POETRY OF THE AGES
Dylan Thomas once wrote that “The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it.” Our guests tonight certainly share that belief and wish to share some of the poems that inspired it. CHRISTIAN WIMAN is the new editor of Poetry magazine, which is published by The Poetry Foundation. RALPH MILLS, JR. is professor emeritus of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a collection of his writings, Essays on Poetry, has just been published. MICHAEL ANANIA is an old friend of the program, professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago and wrote the introduction to Mills' new book. Be sure to listen this evening as we read and discuss wonderful traditional and modern verse.

THURSDAY, JULY 10TH
NATIONAL STRATEGY FORUM

The National Strategy Forum is a Chicago-based organization that lobbies for the advancement and preservation of democracy through military strategy. Tonight on Extension 720, RICHARD FRIEDMAN, MARILYN DIAMOND and JOHN ALLEN WILLIAMS will join us to discuss the history and mission of this organization and assess how well the U.S. is doing out in the always-dangerous world.

FRIDAY, JULY 11TH
CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE
Once again, Extension 720 casts its eyes to the sky as we examine Chicago's architecture. Join us as we review the best and worst of the Windy City's skyscrapers and highlight the newest buildings and construction projects. On hand will be BLAIR KAMIN, architecture critic for the Chicago Tribune and architects LARRY BOOTH of Booth Hansen Associates and DAN COFFEY of Daniel P. Coffey and Associates, Ltd. to give their expert opinions.

MONDAY, JULY 14TH
INNOVATIONS IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

All this week at McCormick Place, food technologists are gathering to discuss the latest trends and techniques in food technology at the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting/FOOD EXPO! Not sure what exactly a food technologist does? Tune into the program tonight to find out as we discuss the science behind our food--as well as the future of eating in America--with a panel of food experts, including CHARLES SANTERRE, national spokesperson for the Institute of Food Techologists, and ANURADHA PRAKASH, chair of Chapman University's (Calif.) WALTER ISAACSON—former editor-in-chief of Time magazine and author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life—joins us along with LOREN GHIGLIONE, dean of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, and our old friend DICK CICCONE to discuss the evolution of journalism in America and how it has shaped our world.


THURSDAY, JULY 17TH

All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror IRAN, PAST AND PRESENT
Tonight’s program focuses on one of the three countries in President Bush’s famed “axis of evil”: Iran. New York Times correspondent STEPHEN KINZER—author of the new book All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror—will join us along with our old friend JOHN MEARSHEIMER and KAVEH EHSANI, a former political science professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and current editor of the Iranian political journal Goft-o-gu ("Dialogue"), to discuss the history and contemporary political situation of this powerful Shiite nation that borders Iraq.

Chicago Aviation: An Illustrated History AVIATION IN CHICAGO
Does the Meigs Field debacle have you down? Are you interested in hearing the history of O’Hare and about its possible expansion? Or are you just an aviation buff? Whatever the case may be, tonight’s program is for you. Former Chicago Tribune transportation editor DAVID YOUNG joins us after the ballgame to discuss the history of aviation in Chicago as outlined in his new book Chicago Aviation: An Illustrated History.

SPORTS AND THE LAW

ELDON HAM, an old friend of the program and a renowned lawyer, will be on hand tonight to discuss the relationship between sports and the law. Ham recently authored an article in the Marquette Sports Law Review titled “Aside the Aside: The True Precedent of Baseball in Law.” Sports fans with a penchant for the logic behind the rules should tune in after the 6:35 Cubs game to hear more on this intricate and fascinating topic.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 23RD
ADVENTURES IN BOUNTY HUNTING
The Cubs game has been moved to 6:05, so be sure to join us after the game for another live edition of Extension 720. We will be joined by SCOTT OLSON, a professional bail enforcement officer (or, in the vernacular, bounty hunter) who also runs the National Institute of Bail Enforcement, which is based in Chicago. For the last few decades, the relationship between science and religion has been tenuous at best—most scientists have not considered that deity may lie behind nature’s plan. However, recent scientific work has tried to connect the rules of nature with the teachings of religion. Tonight on Extension 720 we will explore the dialogue between science and religion with LARRY WITHAM, author of the new book By Design: Science and the Search for God, along our old friend DAVID HULL, professor emeritus of philosophy at Northwestern University.

Join us as ROBIN WALLBRIDGE, captain of the HMS Bounty, WILLIAM PINCKNEY, captain of the Amistad, and MIKE MULCAHY, a Chicago native and captain of the tall ship Fame, talk about the history and majesty of these magnificent sailing vessels.
