MONDAY APRIL 1ST
BRANDS
AND BUSINESS
As creator of Nike's "Bo Knows" and "Just Do It" campaigns, and
head of marketing at StarBucks for years, SCOTT BEDBURY is one
of America's leading brand mavens and advertising gurus. Tonight,
he heads our panel's examination of the impact of branding and
the larger issues of how, and why, some companies succeed and
others fail. Bedbury's recent book is
New
Brand World: Ten Principles for Achieving Brand Leadership in
the Twenty-First Century. LEWIS LAZARE of the Chicago Sun-Times
and DON SCHULTZ of Northwestern University will join in the discussion.
TUESDAY APRIL 2ND
BASEBALL
Ahhh, Spring once again is upon us and with it another year of
Major League Baseball. When Dante wrote, "Abandon all hope, ye
who enter here", we assume he was not addressing Cub fans at the
outset of a new season. We will take a hopeful approach to the
upcoming campaign as Milt is joined by baseball gurus PHIL ROGERS
of The Chicago Tribune, CARRIE MUSKAT of mlb.com, and WGN's own
DAVID KAPLAN.
WEDNESDAY APRIL 3RD
MIDDLE EAST CRISIS
The bloodshed in the Middle East continues to worsen. Israel has
barricaded Yasser Arafat in his office, the Arab nations have
united around the Palestinian cause, and neither side appears
willing to cool down. Will it end at all-out war? We take another
look at the crisis, tonight after the ballgame.
THURSDAY APRIL 4TH
AT THE TRIBUNE WITH JOHN KASS
When Mike Royko died in 1997, he left The Chicago Tribune with
big shoes to fill. JOHN KASS has stepped in with distinction and
already is recognized as one of America's leading columnists.
Tonight, he joins Milt after the 6:05pm ballgame to discuss all
manner of topics: the war, politics, Chicago, the life of an ace
Tribune columnist, and, of course, whatever is on your mind.
FRIDAY APRIL 5TH
ANALYZING THE NEWS
We go to the phones throughout the evening with a slew of heavy
hitters in the fields of politics, journalism, and security studies.
All matters in the news are relevant tonight as we welcome, via
telephone, Professor DONALD KAGAN of Yale University, MORTON KONDRACKE
of Roll Call magazine, DANIEL PIPES of the Middle East Forum,
and Congressman HENRY HYDE. All this begins at 9:00pm.
MONDAY APRIL 8TH
(THE WORLD OF COUNTERINTELLIGENCE has been postponed.)
HOTEL CONCIERGES
Three head concierges from the top hotels in Chicago join
us to discuss their unusual profession and to tell some of the
many fascinating stories from the rich and famous (and others)
who have graced their adopted domiciles over the years. Our guests
will be ABBY HART of The Four Seasons, TODD NELSON of The Peninsula,
and MARK MEHLENBACHER of The Drake Hotel.
TUESDAY APRIL 9TH
GUARDING THE ARCHIVES
Some of the greatest museum-style collections are held in the
great American universities. But what does a University archivist
do and what particular treasure troves do our prominent nearby
universities hold? Find out tonight as PATRICK QUINN of Northwestern
University, BILL MAHER of the University of Illinois, and MICHAEL
GRACE of Loyola University join us to discuss their careers and
their stunning collections.
WEDNESDAY APRIL 10TH
JOHN HOWARD
Extension 720 welcomes back JOHN A. HOWARD, the Senior Fellow
of the Howard Center on Family, Religion and Society in Rockford,
IL. A decorated World War II veteran and member of two presidential
administrations, Howard has devoted his life to promoting traditional
values in government and society. Hear his latest views on the
state of America, beginning at 9:00pm.
THURSDAY APRIL 11TH
THE WAR ON TERRORISM
The Middle East situation has dominated the front pages recently...but
so much of the war on terrorism is tied to that region. Bloodshed
continues in Afghanistan, where the campaign may be far from over.
And looming over the war is the issue of Iraq, and the Arab reaction
to our possible moves against it. Altogether, a gloomy and messy
situation. Our latest look at the status of the war on terrorism
commences at 9:00pm, with General DAVID GRANGE, RICHARD FRIEDMAN
of the National Strategy Forum, and more.
FRIDAY APRIL 12TH
OPEN LINE
Milt talks to our listeners, about his concerns and theirs,
following the baseball game tonight.
MONDAY APRIL 15TH
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SOCIALISM
In the words of tonight's guest, JOSHUA MURAVCHIK, "socialism
was man's most ambitious attempt to supplant religion with a doctrine
claiming to be 'rational' and 'scientific.'" What were socialism's
realistic aims, what were its inherent flaws, and why did it fail?
And is its failure permanent, or might we see a neosocialism arise
in some distant future? Muravchik joins us this evening to discuss
his latest book
Heaven
on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism, as well as the current
events in the news.
TUESDAY APRIL 16TH
STOCKS AND INVESTING
Against much conventional wisdom, the stock markets are steadily
moving onward and upward. Still, is it a wise time to invest?
Our expert panelists PATRICK DORSEY of Morningstar and DAVID BRADY
of Stein Roe will point us in the right direction, following baseball
tonight.
WEDNESDAY APRIL 17TH
ROOSEVELT'S
WAR
Though it was Churchill who said, "Truth is so precious that she
should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies," FDR proved
a clever and willing player in the cloak-and-dagger world of espionage
around the time of the Second World War. Tonight following the
game, we will be airing an interview with JOSEPH PERSICO, author
of
Roosevelt's
Secret War: FDR and World War II Espionage, and more.
THURSDAY APRIL 18TH
LIFE IN THE NFL: AN ENCORE PRESENTATION
Those of you starved for football and waiting in eager anticipation
for this weekend's NFL Draft will welcome tonight's rebroadcast.
Three former Bears--our own TOM WADDLE and GLEN KOZLOWSKI, plus
veteran lineman TED ALBRECHT--join us for a look at life in the
NFL. From the glories on the field to the constant aches and pains
off it, from fame and fortune to youthful retirement, we'll examine
the public and private lives that compose a player's career.
FRIDAY APRIL 19TH
INFECTIOUS
DISEASE
The cases of anthrax that surfaced after 9/11, isolated though
they were, constitute one of the most bizarre chapters in recent
American history. Certainly, it alarmingly opened eyes to the
possibilities of bioterrorism, and created images of mass slaughter.
Tonight, we examine the dreaded prospects of infectious disease.
Be comforted, however--MADELINE DREXLER, the author of
Secret
Agents: The Menace of Emerging Infections, says "the world's
worst bioterrorist isn't the murderer who put anthrax spores in
the mail in the fall of 2001; it's Mother Nature." That pleasant
thought, and more, will be discussed, starting at 9:00pm.
MONDAY APRIL 22ND
INSIDE CHICAGO POLITICS
So much has changed in Chicago Politics since the days of the
Richard J. Daley machine and his rubber-stamp city council--or
has it? We'll look at the always colorful politics of Chicago,
and its impact on state and national policy, with a veteran panel.
Join WGN's own DAVE STEWART and others, beginning at 9:00pm.
TUESDAY APRIL 23RD
HARDBALL
ON THE HILL
Time permitting following the 7:05pm ballgame, we will be airing
our interview with JIM ROBERTS, author of
Hardball
on the Hill. Though currently without a major league team,
Washington, D.C. remains a bastion for baseball. Beginning with
inter-unit pickup games in the great Washington military camps
during the Civil War, through the two "terms" of the Washington
Senators, to the baseball background of our current president,
baseball has always been a part of the politics of our capital.
Hear the story, after, appropriately, Cubs baseball.
WEDNESDAY APRIL 24TH
UNMASKING
DEEP THROAT
One of the great mysteries in American history remains the identity
of "Deep Throat", the sensitively placed member of Richard Nixon's
White House who helped Woodward and Bernstein expose the Watergate
scandal. LEN GARMENT, a prominent lawyer in Nixon's administration
and one of the President's top advisers, has his own theory that
he unfolds in
In
Search of Deep Throat: The Greatest Political Mystery of Our Time.
Was it Mark Felt? Alexander Haig? L. Patrick Gray? David Gergen?
Who? Find out, time permitting, after the 7:05pm ballgame tonight.
THURSDAY APRIL 25TH

(THE WORLD OF PSEUDOSCIENCE: AN ENCORE PRESENTATION, POSTPONED

THE MIDDLE EAST
Milt is back live for a few days. Tonight, we'll take a look at
the Middle East from a specifically Israeli perspective. Our guests
will include CHAYA GIL, an Israeli native and Chicago attorney
who is a vice president of the American Jewish Committee; DONI
REMBA, who served as foreign press translator for the Israeli
Prime Minister's Office during the 1977-1978 Camp David Talks;
and MERAV ELKAN, the director of Public Affairs at the Israeli
Consulate in Chicago. Each has a unique perspective on the current
crisis; their views, and disagreements, will be aired beginning
at 9:00pm.
MONDAY APRIL 29
Milt is back live for a few days, and will be in tonight for
a program that has yet to be determined. Find out at 9:00pm.
TUESDAY APRIL 30TH

for a late game.
