Tonight we discuss the career of one
of the leading figures in American literature, one with close ties to
Chicago, namely Saul Bellow. Among the panelists joining the discussion
will be Professor RICHARD STERN of the University of Chicago and JAMES
ATLAS author of a new biography of the writer appropriately titled BELLOW:
A BIOGRAPHY. We will also take time to consider the biography as a
literary form.

THE EVE OF DECISION
Milt talks to an expert panel including
RICHARD CICCONE, former managing editor of the Tribune and Professor CHARLES
LIPSON as we try to decode the presidential race on the eve of the election.
Tonight's show will include telephone interviews with analysts in some
of the key swing states.

We consider the career of a sporting
legend as Milt welcomes into the studio RICHARD BEN CRAMER author of JOE
DiMAGGIO: THE HERO'S LIFE. Cramer's new book is a ground breaking
biography of the great ballplayer revealing many hitherto unknown aspects
of the DiMaggio's life, both on and off the field. Joining Cramer will
be legendary chronicler of the game JEROME HOLTZMAN, the official historian
of Major League Baseball.

of commercially processed chicken is infected with salmonella, there are
fish genes in some tomatoes and that researchers have experimented with
Brazil nut genes in soybeans despite the risk of potentially lethal allergic
reactions. Chef ANNE COOPER author of 'Bitter Harvest' and Scientist ALAN
McHUGHEN author of 'Pandora's Picnic Basket' join Milt to discuss the
darker side of the food business.

Tonight Extension720 goes where senior
police officers fear to tread as Milt talks to SUDHIR ALLADI VENKATESH
author of AMERICAN PROJECT: THE RISE AND FALL OF A MODERN GHETTO. The
book sets out the results of Venkatesh's study of "one of America's most
infamous housing projects, the Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago". Venkatesh
will be joined by other local experts as we consider the state of public
housing in Chicago and elsewhere in urban America.

blew the whistle on Joe Klein and made the front page of the New York
Times by discovering that a previously unattributed poem was in fact written
by Shakespeare, joins Milt to talk about the techniques he employs to
track down 'anonymous' authors. You may have also seen the reports of
his recent revelations, contained in his new book AUTHOR

author of "The Night Before Christmas"

MONDAY NOVEMBER 27TH
TAPED INTERVIEWS
We'll be playing tapes recorded in
recent weeks tonight including an exceptional interview in which Milt
talks to Vietnam vet Hugh Thompson and Trent Angers, authors of The Forgotten
Hero of My Lai : The Hugh Thompson Story. 504 Vietnamese civilians, many
women and children, were killed in the My Lai massacre. The death toll
would certainly have been higher had not Hugh Thompson ordered his helicopter
crew to train their guns on American Troops and his subsequent quick action
to evacuate the area. Although numerous court-martials followed, Thompson's
immediate reward for preventing the massacre, was double duty on the front
where his 'ship was shot down 3 times, the last crash leaving him with
a broken back.
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 28TH
ON THE TRAIL OF TROUBLE
ROBERT D. KAPLAN is a foreign policy
analyst who has made a special study of the strife torn regions of the
world and of the 'Coming Anarchy' on the international stage. Tonight
he joins Milt and an expert panel in a discussion of his new book EASTWARD
TO TARTARY: TRAVELS IN THE BALKANS, THE MIDDLE EAST AND THE CAUCASUS.
Kaplan's travels researching the new book took him through many of the
world's most troubled regions. Tune in as we find out what foreign policy
lessons may be learned from journeys though Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey,
Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan

THE THIN BLUE LINE
Milt welcomes GINA GALLO author of
CRIME SCENES a collection of short accounts of Chicago crimes drawn from
the experiences of Gallo and her colleagues during her 19 years as a Police
Officer patrolling the rougher areas of the city. Among the incidents
recounted in the book are: gang busting with the Insane Fish, felony underwear
theft and the man who tried to hold up a cop bar. Joining Gallo will be
two other experienced police officers including retired homicide detective
DENNIS BANAHAN.
