WORDS
AND PICTURES
Milt talks to celebrated photographer and journalist Art Shay about his
recent memoir ALBUM
FOR AN AGE: UNCONVENTIONAL WORDS AND PICTURES FROM THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
The titles of a few of the plates in the book give a sense of Shays extraordinary
career: 'Hefner looking over my shoulder at my address book', 'Kennedy
with Indians', 'Oak Park's Doomsday Cult' and 'Mobster Moe Dalitz, nailed
by Florence's purse camera.'
TUESDAY
OCTOBER 3RD

college basketball coach and a strong supporter of college sports including
'carpe collum' man Coach Knight. Attempting to resolve the differences

on Negotiation at Harvard Law School and author of the book THE
THIRD SIDE: WHY WE FIGHT AND HOW WE CAN STOP.

FRIDAY
OCTOBER 6TH
INTERNET RADIO.
The information super-highway may be great for stock trading, book buying
and auctioning off grandma’s silver, but it is also a great way to hear
exceptional audio. Whilst WGNradio.com will, of course, be at the top
of any discerning internet audiophiles bookmark list, the web abounds
with incredible recordings and audio streams from the long forgotten to
the cutting edge. Log on and give your browser a treat as we tune in the
web in the company of WGN's David Lawrence, Professor Richard Morris and
Kim Scarborough, tonight on Extension720
MONDAY
OCTOBER 9TH
THE ACTOR SPEAKS
Milt talks to PATSY RODENBURG one of the world's leading voice and acting
coaches and author of the new book THE
ACTOR SPEAKS: VOICE AND THE PERFORMER. She is Ralph Fiennes personal
coach and has worked with Sir Ian McKellan, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Day
Lewis among others. One or two vocal 'lab-rats' will join the conversation
as we demonstrate how to tune up your pipes to the peak of perfection.
TUESDAY
OCTOBER 10TH
GOSSIP
Plagues ravage Northern Zinovia, a volcano erupts in downtown Asbekistan
but all you really care about is whether Brad Pitt shaved before his wedding.
No matter how we may pretend otherwise, often the most interesting part
of a newspaper is the Gossip Column. Tonight Milt welcomes a panel of
ace practitioners of the gossip columnist's art: syndicated columnist
LIZ SMITH author of the eye-opening new biography NATURAL
BLONDE, BILL ZWECKER of the Sun Times and WGN's KATHY O'MALLEY who
spent many years as a gossip hound for the Tribune's Inc. column.
WEDNESDAY
OCTOBER 11TH
THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES DEBATE
We follow WGN's live coverage of the candidates debate with comment and
analysis. Milt is joined in-studio by the considered wisdom of PROFESSOR
PERI ARNOLD of Notre Dame University and the acute intelligence of Extension720
stalwart JOSEPH MORRIS.
THURSDAY
OCTOBER 12TH
JANE AUSTEN
When Jane Austen died in 1817 she was working on a new novel Sanditon.
Although far from complete the remaining fragments suggest that Sanditon
would have been very different from Austen's previous work. Grander in
its ambition, Sandition was to be an unsentimental satire of the spirit
and manners of the Napoleonic era. One of tonight's guests JULIA BARRET,
in her new novel JANE
AUSTEN'S CHARLOTTE, has completed this unfinished work and has, by
all accounts, done justice to the talents of the original author. We're
sure that you will need little persuasion to tune in tonight as Barret
and others discuss, with the usual sense and sensibility, the works of
Jane Austen.
FRIDAY
OCTOBER 13TH
I'M GRILLING AGAIN.....
In a special double bill we welcome two guests, Frank Sinatra's daughter
TINA SINATRA talking about her memories of Ol'Blue Eyes as set out in
her new book MY
FATHER’S DAUGHTER, followed by a recorded interview with heavy weight
GEORGE
FOREMAN talking about food, fighting and life outside the ring.

comment and analysis live in studio from a suitably qualified panel.
WEDNESDAY
OCTOBER 18TH
THE HISTORY OF HERESY
Perhaps "no one expects the Spanish Inquisition", but we can
certainly talk about it. Tonight we welcome an expert panel to talk about
the history of heresy within Christianity. Helping us in our inquiries
will be STEPHEN O'SHEA, author of THE
PERFECT HERESY, and Professor BERNARD MCGINN of the University fo
Chicago. So find a comfortable chair, warm your feet against the auto-da-fe
and tune in to Extension 720
THURSDAY
OCTOBER 19TH
LAKE FOREST COLLEGE
Tonight we will visit Lake Forest College to talk about its history, current
work and educational ethos as we are joined by senior faculty, staff and
students. The occasion for this gathering is the publication of the beautifully
produced new book 30
MILES NORTH:A HISTORY OF LAKE FOREST COLLEGE: ITS TOWN AND ITS CITY OF
CHICAGO.
FRIDAY
OCTOBER 20TH
CETACEAN STUDIES
Even Olympian swimmers can manage little more than a brisk walking pace
splashing across the surface while deeper trips into the blind and crushing
depths are, as the Kursk disaster reminds us, fraught with peril. Hopeless
land lubbers we may be, but cetaceans (that is whales and dolphins) are
superbly adapted to life underwater although they once shared a common
ancestor with camels, pigs and cows. DR RANDALL S WELLS a conservation
biologist for the Chicago Zoological society and Brookfield Zoo (He has
also served as Director of the Center for Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle
Research at Mote Marine Laboratory.) He is currently engaged in the world’s
longest on-going study of wild Dolphins. Join us as Dr Wells and one or
two others talk to Milt about their work and research and provide some
insight into cetacean evolution, behavior and physiology.
MONDAY
OCTOBER 23RD
A LESS THAN TAXING TIME
(Interview postponed from September)
‘Read my lips: no more taxes’. Taxation is always a key issue in elections
and this presidential race is no different, but it seems that the real
tax scandal has escaped the attention of Democrats and Republicans alike.
Tonight Milt welcomes journalists DONALD BARLETT and JAMES STEELE winners
of a modest collection of accolades: two Pulitzer Prizes, the National
Magazine Award, the Polk Award and the Hillman Foundation Award. Barlett
and Steele's latest book, THE
GREAT AMERICAN TAX DODGE: HOW SPIRALLING FRAUD AND AVOIDANCE ARE KILLING
FAIRNESS, DESTROYING THE INCOME TAX AND COSTING YOU. is a shocking
expose of the failure of the present system of taxation. According to
their research 10million people, many with six figure incomes, failed
to file returns thus accounting for $195 billion in lost revenues (or
an extra $2000 dollars in tax for the rest of us). Tune in, as we discuss
the collapse of the tax system, tonight on Extension 720 (This show can
be heard in the Cayman Islands live via the internet)
TUESDAY
OCTOBER 24TH
HOW WE GOT HERE
According to Bishop Ussher in Annales Veteris Ey Novi Testamenti (pub.
1650 AD) yesterday was the 6004th anniversary of the creation of the world.
Tonight's guests take a rather different view of the geological record,
as we discuss the evolution of human beings both in biological and cultural
terms. Joining in the discussion will be PROFESSOR PAUL EHRLICH author
of
HUMAN
NATURES: GENES, CULTURES AND THE HUMAN PROSPECT, and PROFESSOR JEFFREY
McKEE author of THE
RIDDLED CHAIN: CHANCE, COINCIDENCE AND CHAOS IN HUMAN EVOLUTION.
WEDNESDAY
OCTOBER 25TH
MEDITERRANEAN FOOD
Uncork a beaker of the warm south, as the studios of Extension720 fill
with exotic aromas and tantalizing tastes. CLAUDIA RODEN , celebrated
food writer and author of, among others, THE
NEW BOOK OF MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD and MEDITERRANEAN FOOD joins Extension
720 as we talk, in the company of suitably a suitably qualified panel,
about the cuisines of the regions bordering the Mediterranean.
THURSDAY
OCTOBER 26TH
ACTS OF DISUNION
Milt welcomes conservative writer and social critic PETER HITCHENS for
a discussion of his new book, THE
ABOLITION OF BRITAIN: FROM LADY CHATERLY'S LOVER TO TONY BLAIR. Peter
will be joined by one or two other aboriginal Brits as we discuss his
argument that the nation that turned much of the globe Empire Pink is
now reduced to a fragmented, morally and culturally degenerate northern
province of the European Union. Have the Limey’s finally lost the plot?

OCTOBER 30TH
LITTLE GREEN MICROBES
Alas no canals criss-cross the surface of the red planet, but recent,
less imaginative observations of Martian geology have renewed speculation
and research into the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Tonight, Milt
welcomes an expert panel, including LAURENCE BERGREEN author of VOYAGE
TO MARS: NASA'S SEARCH FOR LIFE BEYOND THE EARTH, to discuss the history
of exploration of the planet and the current debate over whether or not
living organisms will be discovered on its seemingly barren surface. We’ll
also talk about the saga of NASA’s recent exploration of the planet, from
the Stakhanovite efforts of that little six wheeled robot, to the metrically
confused probes whose multi-million dollar remains lie wrecked and mute
under the pink Martian sky.
TUESDAY
OCTOBER 31ST
