EXTENSION 720 SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 1ST
Baseball preempts Extension 720 tonight.
MONDAY
SEPTEMBER 4TH
WOULD YOU BUY A USED CAR FROM
THIS MAN?
Anthony Summers, former head of BBC News' Investigative Unit, joins Milt
to discuss his revealing new biography THE
ARROGANCE OF POWER: THE SECRET WORLD OF RICHARD NIXON. Rather than
a rehashing of existing biographical material, Summer's biography includes
new documentary material and interviews with many close to Nixon who have
never before spoken publicly about the former President. Summers who has
already made headlines for his claims about Nixon's personal life has
also leveled more substantial allegations against the late President,
perhaps the most profoundly disturbing that he may have deliberately sabotaged
Johnson's peace efforts in Vietnam for personal political gain, thereby
costing thousands their lives.
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 5TH
A late ball game keeps Extension 720
off the air.
WEDNESDAY
SEPTEMBER 6TH - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH
RAISING AMERICA: A TWO PART
SPECIAL
The most pressing obligation of any
generation is to ensure the well-being of the next. In a two part special,
Extension 720 considers how we are raising and educating the next generation
of Americans. On Wednesday we welcome noted educationist, DIANE RAVITCH
author of LEFT
BACK: A CENTURY OF FAILED SCHOOL REFORMS. Left Back recounts grandiose
efforts by education reformers to use the schools to promote social and
political goals, even when they have diminished the schools' ability to
educate children. Ravitch charges that American schools have been damaged
by three misconceptions: The first is the belief that the schools can
solve any social or political problem; the second is the belief that only
a portion of youngsters are capable of benefiting from a high-quality
education; the third is that imparting knowledge is relatively unimportant,
compared to engaging students in activities and experiences. On Thursday
we welcome child raising expert JOHN
ROSEMOND, author, most recently, of RAISING
A NON-VIOLENT CHILD, as we investigate how, in a world rife with danger
and distraction, we can bring out the best in our young people and encourage
their growth into happy, productive and intelligent individuals.
FRIDAY
SEPTEMBER 8TH
GUT REACTIONS/ WRESTLING WITH
THE ISSUES
In the first half of tonight’s special
show PROFESSOR WILLIAM MILLER joins Extension 720. MILLER is the author
of three striking books, HUMILIATION, THE ANATOMY OF DISGUST and, recently
published, THE
MYSTERY OF COURAGE. A modern analyst of the emotions in the manner of
Robert Burton’s The Anatonmy of Melacholy, Miller was educated as a literary
critic and philologist but now carries out his research from within the
friendly confines of the University of Michigan’s Law School. So ‘Screw
your courage to the sticking-place’ as we provide cultural, psychological
and philosophical analysis of courage, disgust and humiliation tonight
on Extension 720 (Cubs fans may of course call in and tell us about their
vast experience of all of the above). In the second half of the show we
will play a recorded interview with GOVERNOR JESSE VENTURA as he talks
about his new book DO
I STAND ALONE: GOING TO THE MAT AGAINST POLITICAL PAWNS AND JACKALS.
MONDAY
SEPTEMBER 11TH- TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 12TH
AFTER 6.05 BALL GAMES
THE FINANCIAL UNDERBELLY
Franklin observed that ‘In this world nothing can be said to be certain,
except death and taxes’, but perhaps we could augment this quotation for
the modern era, and say that nothing is certain except death taxes and
endless, excessive media coverage of both. Taxes and the financial media
provide the subjects for our two part look into the secret life of the
dollar in your pocket. On Monday we welcome the multiple Pulitzer prize
winning investigative team of DONALD BARLETT AND JAMES STEELE authors
of THE
GREAT AMERICAN TAX DODGE: HOW SPIRALLING FRAUD AND AVOIDANCE ARE KILLING
FAIRNESS, DESTROYING THE INCOME TAX AND COSTING YOU. Then on Tuesday
investigative journalist HOWARD KURTZ author of THE
FORTUNE TELLERS : INSIDE WALL STREET'S GAME OF MONEY, MEDIA, AND MANIPULATION
takes a revealing look at the media’s coverage of financial issues. Kurtz
will be joined by TED C FISHMAN a contributing Editor at Worth and Esquire
Magazines, who has already taken a few swipes at the Financial Press (To
read about his ingenious Dot.Com spoof click visit this
site) So, tune in after the early ballgames for some top dollar radio
on Extension 720
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH
AFTER A 6.05P BALL GAME
Several contenders are in the running
for tonight's show. We'll let you know when the final polls are in.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH - WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER
20TH
Although crowded out by baseball, we’ve
been busy warming up in the bull-pen with a number of big-hitting guests.
Among the recorded interviews that we’ll play after the Cubs are: STEPHEN
AMBROSE discussing the history of the transcontinental railroad, DAVID
GERGEN discussing the quality of American political leadership, and the
author of KUNDUN, MARY CRAIG, talking about the horrors of Chinese oppression
in Tibet.
THURSDAY
SEPTEMBER 21ST
SELLING OUT THE IMPEACHMENT
According to one of tonight's guests, DAVID SCHIPPERS, Chief Investigative
Counsel for the Clinton Impeachment and author of the new book SELL
OUT, the Senate trial of the President was a mockery of Justice. In
SELL OUT Schippers argues that Senators of both parties sacrificed the
rule of law, and the precedents set by previous impeachments, for the
sake of political expediency. As well as setting out the substantive case
against the President, Schippers chastises Senate leaders for failing
to do their duty. For example, in the very first meeting Hyde and the
House Managers had with Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott to discuss the
trial's procedure, Lott told Hyde that: 'Henry, you're not going to dump
this garbage on us.' Join Schippers and an expert panel tonight as we
take a look behind the scenes of the Impeachment and the Trial of William
Jefferson Clinton.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND
Tonight's show has yet to spring from

each of the seven continents. AL HANNAH has scaled even the icy edifice
of Mount Vinson in Antarctica. (see a picture click
here) His sole remaining goal is to summit Everest (His last attempt
finished a frustrating 300ft from the pinnacle). These feats of mountaineering
skill are made all the more note worthy by the fact that AL HANNAH is
70! Tune as we try and glean some tips on staying on top of the world
in one's latter decades, tonight on Extension 720.
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH

ELIZABETH DREW, longtime political writer for the New Yorker and author
of, most recently, THE CORRUPTION OF AMERICAN POLITICS.
FRIDAY
SEPTEMBER 29TH
RECORDED INTERVIEW AFTER THE
6.05P GAME
THE SICK WORLD
"Tens of Millions are dying of
new, untreatable forms tuberculosis, malaria, strep, staph and other organisms.
Millions more are dying of AIDS. Measles and other vaccine-preventable
diseases still kill hundreds of thousands more children every year. Hospitals
have become primary vehicles for the spread of disease-- not their cure.
These are not the results of mysterious malicious microbes. These are
public health failures. The system we trust to ensure safe water, food,
hospitals and communities can no longer, in this globalized world, rise
to the challenge." These troubling words are taken from the cover
of the new book by LAURIE GARRETT, BETRAYAL
OF TRUST: THE COLLAPSE OF GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH, an encyclopedic survey
of the multiple threats to health at home and abroad. Tune in to this
previously recorded interview as Garrett elaborates upon her troubling
prognosis.
