INSIDE
THE TOBACCO WARS
Huddled
in doorways and on fire-escapes, the refugees from the war against Tobacco
clearly suffer for their addiction in more ways than simply the risk to
their health. As Chicago plays host to the 11th
World Conference on Tobacco OR Health, we revisit the medical, legal,
political and social controversies surrounding the use of Tobacco. Tonight’s
expert panel includes journalist DAN ZEGART author of the new book CIVIL
WARRIORS: THE LEGAL SIEGE ON THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY, Dr ALAN BLUM an
expert witness in the recent Florida case, and Director of the University
of Alabama Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society, and CLIFFORD DOUGLAS

A
LITERARY EVENING
Over the month we've been recording a number of fascinating interviews
with writers and critics of great note. Unfortunately long ball games
have not allowed us to air them, so we are dedicating tonight’s two hours
to the literary arts and playing a selection of these interviews. On the
roster are BARONESS
P.D. JAMES one of the worlds great novelists and grande dame of crime
writers, CHARLES McGRATH editor of the New
York Times Book Review and THOMAS LYNCH poet, undertaker and National
Book Award Nominee.
MONDAY
AUGUST 14TH
RECORDED INTERVIEWS FOLLOW THE 7.05 CUBS GAME
Among the interviews we may play are a discussion with best-selling crime
writer RIDLEY
PEARSON about the year he spent in Oxford as the Raymond Chandler/Fullbright
Fellow of Detective Fiction and the secrets he unearthed thumbing through
the Chandler archive, conducting research for his many novels, and the
occasions on which life has decided to imitate art.
TUESDAY
AUGUST 15TH
MUSLIM
AMERICAN SOCIETY
"For all his fire in the belly rhetoric Mr. Farrakhan
isn’t the dominant voice in the African American Muslim Community. Today
that distinction... belongs to a tiny man with a soft lisp who drives
a Plymouth Neon-- and who is a son of Mr. Farrakhan’s mentor, Elijah Muhammed,
architect of the Nation of Islam. Hundreds of thousands of African Americans
Muslims-- including boxing great Muhammad Ali-- call the self-effacing
65 year old man their imam, or spiritual leader." This description,
from the Wall Street Journal, of tonight’s guest IMAM W. DEAN MOHAMMED
nicely summarizes the importance of his organization within American Islam
and African American society. Tonight, we are pleased to be joined by
Imam Mohammed and other members of the Muslim American Society as they
prepare for their annual convention in Chicago.
WEDNESDAY
AUGUST 16TH
THE

we’re NOT arguing). However, before the dulcet tones of Koslowski, Waddle
and Hampton gain the air, we’ll have time to talk about some of the most
infamous maritime disasters to have occurred on the Great Lakes, including
the notorious Eastland Disaster, with naval historian and documentary
maker MARK
GUMBINGER. Find out what dark secrets lie at the bottom of Lake Michigan
tonight on Extension 720.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 30TH
FAITH IN FABRICATION?
Tonight
a very special show as we welcome two guests who have done extensive research
into the most famous Christian relic in the world: The Shroud of Turin.
WALTER McCRONE of Chicago’s McCRONE
RESEARCH INSTITUTE, a leading microscopist, is convinced that the
shroud is a masterpiece of mediaeval forgery and that close analysis of
the composition of the shroud reveals the presence of paint pigments rather
than blood. GILBERT
LAVOIE MD another longtime scholar of the shroud and a highly experienced
physician is convinced that similar close examination proves that the
shroud is not a forgery. Indeed so certain of this claim is he that the
Buffalo News quotes him as saying ‘I’d give $2000 to any person who can
prove to me that the shroud is fake’. Tune in as we sift the divine from
the devious tonight on Extension 720.
THURSDAY
AUGUST 31ST-SEPTEMBER 1ST
