THURSDAY JUNE 1ST KHRUSHCHEV While the Cuban missile
crisis may have enabled Kennedy to 'walk tall' in the face of Soviet
expansionism, it also brought a premature and somewhat paradoxical end to
he career of one of the Soviet Union's most progressive leaders, ushering
in the bleak conservatism of the Breshnev era. Tonight we are privileged
to be able to discuss the career of Nikita Khrushchev with his son SERGEI
N. KHRUSHCHEV. Sergei's new book NIKITA KHRUSHCHEV AND THE CREATION OF A SUPERPOWER is a
compelling account of how an ordinary Russian with little formal education
was able to rise through the party ranks, survive the terrors of Stalinism
and become leader of the other most powerful nation on earth. Tune in for
a fascinating tour of the innermost machinery of the USSR at the height of
the Cold War, tonight on Extension 720.
FRIDAY JUNE
2ND PHYSICIAN HEAL
THYSELF
According to one of tonight's
guests, DR JAMES LE FANU,author of THE RISE AND FALL OF MODERN MEDICINE, while the medical
accomplishments of the postwar years stand at the front ranks of human
endeavor, advances in medicine have recently slowed to a near halt. In the
three decades after the war, medicine won the wars against polio and
diphtheria. It developed treatments to control the progress of
Parkinson's, rheumatoid arthritis, and schizophrenia. It made realities of
open-heart surgery, organ transplants and test-tube babies. For thirty
years clinical science, medical technology, and pharmaceutical innovation
thrived. But in recent years, Le Fanu claims, medical research has become
moribund, distracted by ever increasing administrative burdens, misplaced
research priorities and theories of social medicine which place an
exaggerated emphasis on prevention rather than cure. Tonight our expert
panel, including medical researchers DR KATE MULLANE and DR JOSE PALIDO
considers the current state of medical research, it's priorities and
progress and assesses Le Fanu's analysis and program of reform.

WEDNESDAY JUNE
7TH MARRIAGE IN MIND (POSTPONED FROM MARCH) 'My true love hath
my heart and I have his, by fair exchange one for the other given...' The
transactions of modern love can often seem cheaply brought when compared
to the agonies and ecstasies of the great romances of literature and
history. In WING TO WING, OAR TO OAR: READINGS IN COURTING AND MARRYING
(THE ETHICS OF EVERYDAY LIFE) by AMY and LEON KASS, profound and
beautiful writings on love, marriage and courtship are collected. Taken
together these provide a persuasive defense of married life. Tune in for
some literary advice, that will last long after the roses have wilted,
tonight on Extension 720.
THURSDAY JUNE
8TH THE STATE OF CHURCH AND STATE
Although the
separation of Church and State is one of the founding principles of
American society, there remains considerable latitude its interpretation
and fierce debate over its probity. Whether the issue is abortion or
prayers before high-school football, matters of concern to both politics
and religion often overlap. Tonight MARTIN E. MARTY author of POLITICS, RELIGION AND THE COMMON GOOD: ADVANCING A
DISTINCTLY AMERICAN CONVERSATION ABOUT RELIGIONS ROLE IN OUR SHARED
LIFE joins Extension 720, as we consider, in company of an expert panel,
the proper role of religion in the public life of America.
FRIDAY JUNE
9TH GOLD FROM THE VAULT PART III If the guys in cleats wrap things up in good time previously

game
MONDAY JUNE
12TH AN EVOLVING DEBATE
The genotype,
metaphorically speaking, of evolution is the theory articulated by Charles
Darwin in 1859 and subsequently elaborated and verified by a host of
notable scientists, yet the phenotype, the theory as it is actually found
and interpreted, takes on a bewildering variety of forms. Not only is
there disagreement in the scientific community about the precise nature of
evolution, but to those on the Christian right the theory isn't
'scientific' at all, but only one of a number of possible theories about
the origin of species. Tonight we are pleased to welcome NILES ELDREDGE
author of THE TRIUMPH OF EVOLUTION...AND THE FAILURE OF
CREATIONISM to the program as we discuss the controversies within
evolutionary theory (Eldredge is one of the original proponents of the
Theory of Punctuated Equilibrium) and between evolutionary science and
fundamentalist religious belief. Tune in, as we discuss matters
evolutionary, tonight on Extension 720.
TUESDAY JUNE
13TH GOLD FROM THE VAULT PART IV A recorded interview follows tonight's 7.05p game
WEDNESDAY JUNE
14TH HILLARY THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Tonight Milt
talks to NBC special correspondent LAURA INGRAHAM author of THE
HILLARY TRAP: LOOKING FOR POWER IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES. To many,
Hillary represents the archetypal strong woman at the forefront of her
career; yet, according to Ingraham, scratch the surface of that success
and you'll find a victim, a woman who symbolizes not personal triumph but
compromise and concession, caught in her own Faustian tryst. It is
Ingraham's view that, if anything, Hillary's mix of opportunism,
acquiescence, and dependency sets women back, rather than leading them
forward. But this failing, Ingraham contends, is not unique to Mrs Clinton
but is indicative of the way in which women sacrifice their own power and
talents in return for superficial and ultimately limited gains. Tune in
tonight as we follow Hillary Rodham Clinton's journey from CUBS
supporting, WASP Illinoisan to YANKEES supporting, fractionally Jewish New
York Senatorial candidate.
THURDAY JUNE
15TH WOULD THE REAL CITIZEN KANE STEP FORWARD
Consolidation
in the media industry surges on apace. Now the people you buy your
newspaper from may well own the TV channel that you watch, the internet
site that you most commonly visit and, for good measure, the radio station
to which you listen. But as the individuals running the media become ever
more powerful, so they become ever less conspicuous. It seems that the day
of the blustering press baron is long past, a lumbering Jurassic figure
since replaced by the elusive eminence grise of the dot.com decades.
Tonight Extension 720 considers the careers of the great press barons, in
the company of an expert panel including DAVID NASAW, author of THE CHIEF: THE LIFE OF WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST. Nasaw's
definitive biography is based on newly released private and business
papers and interviews. For the first time, documentation of Hearst's
interactions with Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill, and every American
president from Grover Cleveland to Franklin Roosevelt, as well as with
movie giants Louis B. Mayer, Jack Warner, and Irving Thalberg, completes
the picture of this colossal American and purported inspiration for the
movie Citizen Kane.
FRIDAY JUNE
16TH TAKING STOCK If you've been following the
stock market lately you may be experiencing motion sickness, and if you've
invested in it the symptoms may be much worse. While we can't promise a

tonight's show may be the first step back to sound financial health. Join
our expert panel of Dow Jones Doctors and Nasdaq Nurses, including PETER
ZIV of Ziv Investments, DAVID BRADEY of Stein Roe and ROBERT STREED of
Northern Trust, tonight as they take the pulse of the markets and offer
their own recommendations for sanity and bon sante in the midst of present
difficulties.
MONDAY JUNE
19TH RESTAURANTS, RESTAURANTS EVERYWHERE AND NOT A BITE TO
EAT Business speak it may be, but
the phrase 'option paralysis' aptly describes the experience of trying to
dine out in Chicagoland with its bewildering wealth of restaurants.
Thankfully, help is at hand as tonight we welcome the discerning palettes
of food critics, DON ROSE, PHIL VETTEL and LAURA LEVY-SHATKIN. Tune is as
they sort the wheat from the polenta and review the best and worst places
to eat out in Chicago.

MONDAY JUNE
26TH THE GOOD SHEPHERD?
"Catholics
have fallen out of the healthy old habit of reminding each other how
sinful Popes can be," notes one of tonight's guests Pulitzer Prize winner
GARRY WILLS in the introduction to his new book PAPAL SIN: STRUCTURES OF DECEIT. In his book, Wills
alludes occasionally to the most egregious papal scoundrels: "In the tenth
century a dissolute teenager could be elected Pope (John XII) because of
his family connections and die a decade later in the bed of a married
woman." But most his energy is devoted to an analysis of recent popes'
doctrinal pronouncements, which Wills believes have eroded the Church's
moral authority and contributed to the drastic decline in vocations to the
priesthood today. Join Wills and other guests, of a different stripe, as
we consider the legacy of the modern Papacy tonight on Extension
720.
TUESDAY JUNE
27TH AFTER A 6.05p BALL GAME GETTING ABOUT WITHOUT THE
GAS There is, of course, a small
black hole in the fuel tank of your new SUV, just as there is, everyone
knows, a direct feed from your wallet into the bank accounts of several
OPEC nations. It is the agony we all bear, gas stations that might as well
be selling Bolinger, asthmatic smog choked cities and a Venusian global
atmosphere. If only someone would invent a car that runs on water. Well,
as it turns out, they just might. Tonight we welcome an expert panel
including PROFESSOR ROBERT LARSON of ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORIES to talk
about the alternatives currently being developed to the internal
combustion engine, including cars that run on the basic ingredients of
good old H20. So if pump prices pinch don't blow a fuse - put one in your
car, crank up the solar panel and tune in to tonight's fuel cell powered
edition of Extension 720.
WEDNESDAY JUNE
28TH AFTER A 6.05p BALLGAME Tonight's show is still underconstruction, we'll let you know as
soon as the finished model is ready.

readers will have caught the revelation made by tonight's guest,
Baseball's official historian, Jerome Holtzman, that the campaign to clear
Shoeless Joe Jackson may have struck out. Tonight, in the company of
Holtzman, we will discuss baseball players and games past and present as
we line up a pennant winning conversation about the great game with one of
America's finest sportswriters.
