Andrea Darlas
Andrea Darlas anchors the morning news on WGN weekdays, 5-9 a.m.. She's also a reporter for the station, and covers a variety of newsmakers on a daily basis.
Before joining WGN, Andrea was news director and morning news anchor at WJOL-AM, WLLI-FM, and WJTW-FM in Joliet. During her tenure there, Andrea won several first place awards from the Associated Press in the "Best Spot News" category for 1996 and 1997.
Andrea's career in broadcasting started in Champaign. After graduating with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Illinois, Andrea worked as a reporter for two local radio stations: WLRW-FM and WDWS-AM (the voice of the Fighting Illini). Her first job in radio was as a disc jockey for the student rock station WPGU-FM.
Andrea has covered a wide array of news stories, including the George Ryan fraud and corruption trial, witnessing an execution at Stateville Prison in Joliet, and serving as a correspondent for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia.
Andrea recently took home 2nd Place honors in the "Best Reporter" category from the Associated Press. Since joining WGN Radio, Andrea has won several team awards in the "Best Spot News Coverage" category, including the Chicago Headline Club's Peter Lisagor Award. She holds two prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio and Television News Directors' Association-- one for radio for "Best Spot News" reporting; the other for television for "Arts Reporting." Andrea recently won the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Silver Dome Award for "Best Newscast."
In addition to her radio duties, Andrea serves as a correspondent for Mr. Fix-It Lou Manfredini's television show House Smarts on NBC 5, Chicago. She is also a freelance News Reporter for CLTV (Chicagoland Television) with her reports having aired on Tribune sister stations, WGN-TV and KTLA in Los Angeles.
Andrea is an HUGE Cubs fan and an even bigger Illini fan. Her hobbies include golf, biking, shopping, and traveling.
