A Cook County inmate punched a sheriff's deputy after a hearing at the Criminal Courthouse today, leaving the nine-year veteran with a fractured eye socket.

Rayvon Parker, 20, of the 9300 block of South Kenwood Avenue, was being returned to Cook County Jail following a routine hearing for the murder charges he faces when he attacked the 32-year-old deputy, according to sheriff's spokesman Steve Patterson.

Numerous deputies responded to the third-floor courtroom at 26th Street and California Avenue a little after 1 p.m. and had to use disabling chemical on Parker before getting him under control, Patterson said.
