Dog Heroes of September 11th
I believe most people recall where they were the morning of September 11, 2001. I was watching the Today Show, as I saw the horrifying events unravel, one by one.
By September 12, I managed to somehow reach search and rescue dog handlers at Ground Zero and at the Pentagon -- as they described the scene for several powerfully emotional newspaper columns.
On September 13, I repeated some of those interviews for the WGN Radio newsroom. These accounts were among the first on-scene described live on WGN.
On September 15, on my then WGN Radio show, Pet Central, tearful listeners responded with phone calls and emails as handlers from those large piles at the site of the World Trade Center and also from the Pentagon spoke with me live. On this Podcast marking the 10th anniversary of September 11, I once again speak with several dog handlers. We remember 9-11, their work and their dogs. Participating are handlers Chris Selfridge, Tony Zinsmaster and Shirley Hammond. I also talk with Nona Kilgore Bauer, author of an amazing remembrance, Dog Heroes of September 11th.
