Several years ago, as part of a new contract between the unions representing voice talent and the advertising agencies, a fee structure was implemented that pays the voice talent extra when commercials they are heard in are played on the Internet. The fees are a significant increase over the usual rate, while the Internet audience generally is a small fraction of the audience listening over-the-air. In many cases, the advertising agencies pass these extra costs on to the radio stations that choose to have Internet feeds, or they ask stations to not to play specific recorded commercials on their online feeds. Rather than pay these additional fees or attempt to remove commercials from the feed on a case by case basis, WGN, and many other radio stations nationwide, have chosen to play alternate audio during breaks in our programming. Currently, we are playing commercials and public service announcements that are free of any extra fee issues.
